Grow A Pear

A mobile app that uses storybook-style imagery make community gardening glamorous (and the project won my team second place in a hackathon)

The app

I developed Grow a Pear with an interdisciplinary team during a hackathon. The event was part of my internship with Esri, the world leader in mapping software. Each team’s app submission had to use Esri mapping technology, so my group chose to focus on connecting individuals in a geographic area to facilitate community-based gardening.

These buttons allow users to find an open, nearby garden to plant in, based on what they would like to grow.

Grow A Pear allows users to find gardens with open space, and the gardeners and landowners share the profit. This screen lets a user input how much profit they want to keep—how many pears (fruits/vegetables) out of every five.

Users can see the results of their garden search on a map screen.

The brand (abridged)

Grow A Pear’s icons are designed for versatility across mobile, web and print advertising. They are effective at different scales—from the buttons in the app to big outdoor signage! I chose Mrs Eaves as our typeface, since its transitional nature blends elements of old and new in the same way our app adapts a traditional practice like farming for the digital age.

The presentation

The hackathon culminated in a presentation for the fellow competitors and Esri employees. Here are some highlights:
